Understanding the true cost of elephant entertainment.
At Elefanjoy, our primary mission is the welfare of our elephants. This is why we established a strict "No Riding" policy in 2012, setting a new standard for ethical tourism in Jaipur.
For decades, riding elephants up the Amber Fort has been a popular tourist activity. However, many visitors are unaware of the physical and psychological toll this takes on these gentle giants. We believe that to truly love elephants, we must respect their bodies and their freedom.
Contrary to popular belief, an elephant's spine is not designed to carry heavy weight on top. Their strength lies in pulling (like a truck), not carrying loads vertically (like a pillar). The "Howdah" (the heavy iron seat used for rides) can weigh up to 100kg even before tourists climb in.
prolonged use of these seats causes severe spinal damage, abscesses, and long-term tissue damage that causes the animal constant pain.
"We do not own them. We do not command them. We simply love them. And love does not ride."
We invite our guests to experience something far more profound than a ride: Connection.
When you walk alongside an elephant (our "Bush Walk" experience), you are moving at their pace. You watch them dust bathe, forage for food, and rumble to one another. You see their personalities shine when they are not controlled by fear or hooks.
By choosing an ethical sanctuary, you are voting for a future where animals are respected, not exploited. Thank you for being part of the change.
